History of User Experience in Singapore

The earliest dates back to World War II
During World War II, the U.S. military invited many psychologists to conduct research on aircraft cockpits. The most famous one is that psychological cognitions are found through psychological experiments to reduce operational errors. During this period, the corresponding experts in human psychology and engineering psychology involved in this experiment.

We know that the entire instrument cockpit arrangement is intricate and complicated. It requires pilots to quickly identify and react to all the numbers in the instrument. Perhaps a few seconds of mistakes can result in machine crash. So at that time: the dashboard of the aircraft, in the end, is black and white or black and white more convenient for people to instantly identify?
Experiments show that black and white, that is, in a very dark background more light-coloured font is the most instantaneous identification, which was an important research result. At this time, research tends to be the reaction and interaction between people and machines, mainly on the physiological level.

At that time, Human Factors and Human Ergonomics Ergonomics as the basic research subjects, research on human behaviour, including the study of human workload and so on, can be seen from the following table, these studies from the theoretical level for the user experience lay the initial foundation.
Maslow hierarchy theory of need
By the 1960s, Maslow, a well-known psychologist in the United States, put forward the motivation and demand theory and became the basis for our user research. Maslow made the entire human needs from substance to spirit into a pyramid structure.

The first one is physical needs, such as the demand for survival, food, water needs; the second level of security needs, such as going out there will be no accident, there is a safe home home; the third Level is the need of belonging and love; the fourth level is social demand; the highest is the need of self-actualization.
Based on this theory, for the product we deconstruct it, divided into several different contents, that is, functions, tasks, processes, goals, symbols, respect.
Associating Maslow’s lowest level with the product, the basic needs of the product are functions. The user can perform the tasks according to the product functions. In order to complete the tasks, a process needs to be completed to accomplish a goal. The highest level is what we call product ownership and symbolic needs. Maslow came up with the motivation and demand theory that guided our ability to translate people’s needs into products in user research.
The popularity of computer applications
After the popularization and application of computers in the 90s of last century, the corresponding category of interaction between people and machines is not limited to the physical level but extends to the psychological level.
From the physiological level more than the psychological level. The interaction between people and machines not only needs to be simple, comfortable and healthy. Corresponding disciplines and terminology are often used at this time:
- Usability Engineering referred to as UE.
It is mainly about people and products in the process of interaction, how people and products to do simple and practical, pleasant and practical.
- User Interface Design referred to as UI / UID.
Speaking of how to design a user interface between people and machines, more from the information structure design, interaction and visual design, how to ensure that the process of interaction between people and machines, so that the task is how users are simple and practical, pleasant and practical, which we call User interface design.
- User Research, abbreviation UR.
It is a very important foundation for user interface design. It mainly focuses on how to classify product target population and how to excavate demand according to different groups of people. Then it classifies, analyzes, summarizes and sorts user’s needs and finally turns demand into product functionality, this is user research.
- Human-computer interaction, Human-Computer Interaction, referred to as HCI.
The closest word to this term is MMI, Man-Machine Interaction. They talk about basically the same, the interaction between people and machines is not limited to the physical level of the content, more psychological level, coupled with the user goals, tasks and tasks to complete fluency and feel.
- Usability Testing referred to as UT.
Some domestic translation into usability tests, I personally feel that the usability is more certain than usability because a product is only easy to use, not available or not available if it is not available it can not be a product.
