How to deal with Stakeholder in User ResearchAs a user researcher, you need to do user research frequently. User research is a necessary way to know more about user, and get the deeper insight into the human need for design innovation and better user experience. Your research objects are not only user, but also stakeholders.
As for user research, stakeholders covers every aspect of product team. The most direct is product designer and project manager, also include data analyst, engineer, marketing. Better user researcher can not also help better present user behavior and thoughts, but also help to resolve problems in determining.
If you want to get full information, user research can’t be ignored.  There are more than one user research methods. Tomer Sharon who is a user experience researcher of Google did a research on how to deal with stakeholders. Some important questions are listed below.

What is the product?

As a member of the product team, user researcher needs to know the current product status. Why we need to design and develop this product? What doesn’t this product use for? What function does this product have? Which stage is the product at? What need can this product meet?
Who is the user of this product?
Try to ask who will be the user of this product? Are there any different segments of users? Why? It would be helpful for researchers to recruit similar users to the user research when you know the specific user group. Build user persona, contexts and user journey, map out a story.
What do you want to know from the research? Why?
You need to know the detailed requests. Ask stakeholders what functions they want the product to have? How will these functions benefit them in business? Get the frank and honest thoughts from them, keep in mind and note them. User researcher can develop appropriate user methods.

When you need the research results?

The greatest challenge is that you need to deal with the research project in short time quickly. So it is very necessary for you to determine and figure out when the research results are needed to be delivered. Deadline will impact the design of research. For example if the deadline is too short tomorrow, researcher needs to think how to finish the task efficiently, maybe you need to sacrifice some factors.
What will you use the research result for?
All the users who come up with the requirements have some expects. For example, User likes product A, dislikes product B, the preference can help them make decisions. More importantly, this question will ensure the team members makes actions based on the research results, thus to show the impact of user research.
What you have know?
When team members claim they have known a lot about user behavior and needs, user research needs to show the results are deeper than what they have known. In this case, the task of user researcher is to send the questions to team members firstly. It will invoid team member saying“we know this already” when you present them the final results and report.
